Nias Surf Destinations

LATITUDE ZERO - Telos Islands

THE RESORT: The small complex consists of two beautiful timber Queenslander-style homes of pole construction with a separate open kitchen and dining gazebo between the houses that overlooks the 7 x 14m in-ground infinity swimming pool. The entire complex overlooks the beach and natural boat harbour where the resort speedboats are tied to floating pontoons just offshore.
The homes have Colorbond roofing and insulated and cladded walls with large eaves that create undercover, wrap-around timber verandahs on the top floor providing cool breezes and awesome 270 degree ocean views. The top floor of both homes features a large hang-out lounge area with a huge flat screen TV and high ceilings, fans and lots of louvres produce a natural cooling affect. Each house has six air-conditioned bedrooms on the top floor, two of which have ensuites. All bedrooms are interchangeable to suit the needs of individual groups – they can be configured as family rooms, twin share boy’s rooms or very private couple’s rooms. Each bedroom has a set of louvres and French doors opening onto its own section of the verandah.
The lower level of the homes is on the same level as the garden and pool and features an open plan layout. The south house has storage rooms for your bags and boards, a small gymnasium and entertaining area and the northern house contains the main office area, a library/chill-out area, massage tables and kitchen stores etc.
The boatshed, which has big timber doors and is located right on the beach facing the harbour area, houses all the marine toys. The staff quarters are located behind this shed.
The waste-water system, designed and fitted by a registered Australian plumber, is very environmentally friendly and utilises aeration tanks that run off into hydrophilic gardens behind the resort complex. Being situated on its own island means Latitude Zero can instil systems to eradicate the risk of malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases.

THE AREA:The Batu Islands, commonly known as the Telo Islands, are made up of three large main islands and approximately 48 smaller islands located right on the equator at latitude zero degrees. They are situated between Nias and the Mentawai Islands, which strategically places them in the centre of an archipelago that stretches along the west coast of Sumatra, a region that has become one of the international surfing Meccas of the world in the last decade.
Nias was split into two regents of north Nias and south Nias in 2003 and the Telos are part of the South Nias regent, with its administration centre being Teluk dalam. The Nias island chain has been trading with other cultures, other islands and even mainland Asia since prehistory. Some archaeologists have cited the local culture as one of the few remaining Megalithic cultures in existence today.
Nias is best known for its remarkable diversity of festivals and celebration, with some of the best-known events being war dances and stone jumping (where the top of the stone board is covered with spikes and sharp pointed bamboo). The music of Nias, performed mostly by women, is noted worldwide for its haunting beauty. The predominant religion is Protestant Christian (around 80 percent) resulting from the early missionaries travelling through the islands, with the remainder being Muslim or Catholic.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa for Indonesia?
As of March 2004, nationals of United States, Australia, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, United Arab Emirates, Finland, Hungary, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Germany, Canada, South Korea, Norway, France, Poland, Switzerland, New Zealand and Taiwan must pay $US25 for on entry visa on arrival in Indonesia.
How do I get to Padang or Medan?
Depending on where you’re coming from, there are several different options you can use to get to Padang or Medan (for example you can fly to Padang via Singapore, via Kuala Lumpur, via Jakarta etc). For more details please contact us to work out what suits you best....
What about travel insurance?
ALL guests must have full comprehensive travel and medical insurance and should include at least a MedEvac option and compensation for lost charter days due to unforeseen circumstances or emergencies.
How many boards should I bring?
This is entirely up to how much excess baggage you are willing to pay for! Most people bring two to four boards. The normal board you ride at home is fine and perhaps a slightly larger semi-gun. If you are going to bring an extra board we would suggest a replacement for the board you will use the most as it is not uncommon to break boards. Remember to bring extra leg ropes and tropical surf wax.
What do you suggest I pack?
Besides yourself and your surfboards, we recommend that you at least try to bring the following items:
2 or 3 pairs of board shorts
Some T-shirts
Solarez - the type with rovings in it
Spare leg ropes
Rash vests
Tropical surf wax
Spare fins and keys, spare plugs and screws if you have FCS syste
Mosquito repellent
Can I recharge my video camera etc?
Yes! No problems.
Can I be contacted while I am staying at Telo Island Lodge?
Yes, you can be contacted on your mobile phone as long as you have global roaming activated. You can also be contacted on the lodge manager’s phone.
Due to medical or personal reasons I follow a special diet. Can you accommodate this?
Yes, with prior notification we can accommodate most dietary requests.
Can you give me an idea of how many other people I'll be surfing with?
Our aim is to spend the majority of our trips surfing with just the people staying at the lodge (maximum eight). This is not always possible, but there are plenty of waves in this area and due to our extensive experience we know how to be in the right place at the right time while still avoiding major crowds. Whilst it is inevitable that we will come across other surfers from time to time you can rest assured you will get plenty of waves.
