History
The Mangalui Ndulu was built by well-travelled surfers for the sole purpose of sailing the wave rich coastal islands off Sumatra. Matt Cruden and Greg Spindler have a wealth of knowledge of this area and have designed a comfortable vessel capable of doing those extra miles if required, to give you that little bit of uncrowded extra in your Sumatran surf voyage. The boys were involved with Dave and Jan Hallet’s yacht ‘Katika’ in 1993,94 and 95 with the delivery from Australia to Sumatran waters and its first few seasons of operating in the Mentawai Islands. This was basically the birth of commercial yacht charters in Sumatra with only two or three boats along the entire coast. Greg and Matt joined forces to make a surfers dream a reality – to build a custom surf vehicle to go searching and surfing in August 1995. For over a year, Matt and Greg lived in small primitive village on the Eastern side of Indonesia, on the Island of Sulawesi. Working closely with the Bugis boat builders to bring together some Eastern and Western knowledge, to create the 82ft sold ironwood and teak wood motor sailor.
The Bugis men are well-known sailors and pirates of Indonesian history. Their sailing vessels largely influenced by the Dutch trading vessels of previous centuries; during which the Dutch moved into the area to reap the benefits of the ‘Spice Islands’ trading. After a six-week mission of launching the Mangalui Ndulu across the ribbon reef lying offshore (using many hands, block and tackle, tug boats and hundreds of 44 gallon drums), she set off for a two-month journey around Indonesia for her test run with a few mates. Arriving back into Sumatran waters late October 1996.
Mangalui has been operating out of Padang in West Sumatra since then doing surf trips up and down the coast, from Panaitan Island in West Java up to the northern islands off Aceh (North Sumatra). We are now proud to say that we can enjoy the benefits of all our efforts in building the Mangalui and its operation with many friends from all parts of the world. Her reputation speaks for itself with our high percentage of return guests who come to enjoy her mellow, relaxed vibe, memorable times and taste the epic waves Sumatra has to offer.

Todd spent 1989 hanging in Bali and Java and the in the Early 90′s roughed it throughout North and West Sumatra, surfing and discovering.

In the mid 90′s Todd, helped Matt Cruden and Greg Spindler build the famous charter boat ‘Mangalui Ndulu’ in Sulewesi and after delivering the Mangalui to Sumatra with Matt Cruden he went back to Sulewesi and built the ‘Nomad’. After another year or so in Sulewesi, Todd set sail on ‘Nomad’ on a big surf and search trip to Sumatra via Sumba, Sumbawa, Lombok and Java. He didn’t get past West Java however. The Mentawai Islands are a chain of about seventy islands and islets off the western coast of Sumatra in Indonesia.
The most northerly island is Siberut which contains an amazing area of world class waves in a five mile radius. Immediately to the south is Sipora where Telescopes and HT's breaks are. A little way to the south are North and South Pagai. Home to Maccaroni's, Thunder's, and more world class spots. Indonesia is one of the most consistent surf destinations in the world. The Mentawai islands block most swells from reaching the mainland on Sumatra, but they offer some of the most perfect surf in the world.
