Sumbawa Lakey Peak and Lombok surf report

Hi friends,

just want to fill you in on what i have been up to this year of the water dragon…

After celebrating the new year with my Brother Graeme and his family and also a good friend from School – Circo and his family Me and my wife Made decided to get away from Bali and go and enjoy LOMBOK and SUMBAWA……………. Even though for Lakey peak it is not the most consistent time for swell, let me tell you!!!  i arrived on the 17th January and apon checking into Aman Gati hotel i glanced out to the peak and it was absolute perfection solid 6 foot on sets.. some guys getting stand up barrels left and right.. slight side shore wind..about 15 guys in the water and BLUE BLUE skies… it was like this for the next 3 days.. i scored Periscopes, Nunggas and of course the Peak, left Lakey Pipe to the crazy.ahhahah

not much has changed down there except for the road into Lakeys from Dompu is pretty shocking so hopefully the government does something about it.. so now it is definitely at 2.5hr drive.. not to mention the flights, surf board taxes ranging from $2Usd to $1Usd a kilogram. So make sure you don’t put anything other than surfboards in your board bags.. on arrival in Sumbawa there are Police that do passport checks so make sure you take your passport. Our guys in Lakeys are fantastic meeting you inside the terminal to organise your luggage and then straight out the doors to the car and way you go.  Porters like to charge Rp20,000 per person if they help you with your bags.

O.K. so we stayed at Lakey Peak for 7 nights and got to try out the Lakey Houses, these suited us to a tee, as with Made (wife) and 3 small kids the rooms at Aman gati were getting pretty small. The Lakey Houses had seperate bedrooms, nice lounges and spectacular view straight out to the PEAK.  We have included  ANI LESTARI and BALUMBA this year as our SURF CAMP picks. So a great range of accommodation for those that want to head there this year.. Just a piece of advise if you are going during MAY-OCTOBER make sure you don’t take more than your quota of luggage which ranges from 15 to 20 kilos per person as if it is over your bags might not get on the flight.  Here are some photos of the trip..

LOMBOK Then on the 24th we headed over to LOMBOK for another 5 nights, staying at our basic accommodation which was really good actually with a huge huge pool and rooms even though not the best paint jobs but clean and airconditioning always working (even though there are quiet a few BLACK OUTS down there, so have to run the generators).

Also said goodday to Cherie and Jason that run our middle of the range hotel (deluxe) now that place is great nice and new only a year old and the owners make sure it is always kepts looking its best… all rooms now have satelite television as well as DVD players..  Then to finish off the trip went to the NOVOTEL for 2 nights, what can i say that was paradise we stayed in one of there SASAK villas with private share pool.. This is the pick of the bunch i feel this place is better than any resort i have stayed at all over Indonesia it has a great beach and traditional sasak theme and the sunset bar and there daily happy hours hit the spot.   SURF WISE  i surfed OUTSIDE Grupuk nearly everyday ranging from 2-5 foot and crowds ranging from 2 – 20 guests.. due to the winds from Cyclone Iggy, Grupuk outside was the only place that wasn’t being affect too much by these winds. I went with our Surfguides in Lombok  ONO was the man kept me laughing and getting as many waves as i wanted. And our driver Mahnun he is always on time and only too happy to get you safely to the breaks.. They were picking me up before breakfast and then dropping me back at the hotel by 9.30am and then again at 1pm for the arvo sessions.

There are some great places to eat now at Kuta beach i recommend   ANDA BUNGALOW for some tradition SASAK delights (Taliwang). And for a bit of a session (drinks) try GURITO bar they have some great prices and fun fun staff.. basic but across the road from the beach.  If you don’t leave Lombok without a woven bracelet you are doing well as where ever you are the girls will find you.. they sell woven bracelets with your name on it, different colours, beads etc..  they get a bit annoying but for $1usd keep them happy and buy at least one..

SO overall we have a absolute pearler of a time. Great Surf, Great company and accommodation and each destination had something different to offer with the surrounds and the people and the traditions..  So next trip to Indonesia make sure it is with WORLD SURFARIS.

Looks great Mike…we’ll have to get out there next time. Good family photos little ones growing up…What are the bookings like for August September (26/8-8/9/2012). We’d like Allora again unless you’ve found somewhere better.
